“A lot of people – black, white, mexican, young or old, fat or skinny have a problem being true to their ”self”. They have a problem looking into the mirror and looking directly into their own soul that’s the reason ”I am” who ”I am” today cause ”I” can look directly in the mirror and admire my soul”
-Tupac (Pain)
You ever notice that a certain song hits you directly in your soul? That’s the way the ”I” felt the first time she ever listened to Soul tape 1. This is a mixtape released in 2011 by Fabolous. It’s about 51 minutes of deep ”self” reflection and realization. Fabolous speaks on everything ; from raising my frequency to innerstanding the power of coins (change).
The ”I” was working for UPS Freight and like everyone else, she had a music guy who would burn cd’s for ME and a few other people. He was the King of new releases so he was passing me mixtapes that the ”I” didn’t even gno were coming out.
At this particular point in my life the ”I” was familiar with Fabolous but only because of the songs they would play on the radio. I’m from Richmond so the radio stations out here literally only play songs like “So into you” (which is a dope song, but very radio). Not anything that will showcase his wordplay skills. The ”I” often felt like he was an underrated rapper but when the ”I” put my headphones on and listened to the Soul Tape, ”I” realized he was much more than just a rapper.
He spoke truth and with so much clarity that the ”I” had NEVER witnessed before. When ”I” say never; ”I” literally mean never. Up until that point the ”I” considered Jay Z to be my favorite rapper. Oh and Biggie of course because he could paint a visual work of art using just words. Fabolous had a vibe that accompanied his words that could only be compared to scripture.
The ”I” found the ”self” listening to his words everyday and writing down certain lines that held deeper meaning to my soul. It was crazy because ”I” realized that was one of the first times that the ”I” had stepped aside and let my ”higher self” have an experience with hip hop. The ”I” felt like everything the ”I” heard before that moment was only serving my ears. Even now, the ”I” can listen to it because it’s extremely timeless- like any other great piece of art.
Luckily, Fab gave ME three timeless bodies of work with Soul Tape 1, Soul Tape 2 and Soul Tape 3 – all three deserve a lane of their own. All three will compliment whatever it is that my soul needs. And since the ”I” has entered into the age of the three energy (Three energy and what you can expect) it’s only right to reintroduce the ”self” to some good music that will feed my soul.
It’s on every streaming platform around so check it out…. my soul thanks you.
